Era revolusi industri 4.0 telah mengubah cara berpikir tentang pendidikan. Dalam proses pembelajaran telah terjadi pergeseran model dari konvensional ke model pembelajaran yang lebih terbuka, virtual, dan digitalisasi. Peningkatan kualitas pembelajaran dapat dilakukan melalui proses peningkatan komptensi guru sebagai pengelolah pembelajaran. Guru harus memenuhi kriteria atau karakteristik pembelajaran abad 21 yaitu: critical thinking, creativity, communication, dan collaboration. Mengasah konsep berpikir kristis guru dan siswa dapat dilakukan melalui kegiatan literasi digital sehingga guru mengembangkan sistem pembelajaran yang memberikan kebebasan ruang gerak siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuannya (berpikir kritis, logis, kreatif, kolaborasi dan berkomunikasi dengan baik) agar dapat mengantarkan siswa kedalam level kognitif berfikir tingkat tinggi. Selain itu siswa harus memiliki keterampilan 4C yaitu kemampuan critical thinking (berpikir kritis), creativity (kreativitas), collaboration (kolaborasi), dan communication (komunikasi) serta memiliki keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi (higher order thinking skills/ HOTS
